Awesome Client Review

Once of the most AMAZING reviews I have ever had someone write for me. Thank you Lorrina & Aaron!

“I used DJ Pat from Sound Prodigy for my wedding on 11/10 and could not have been happier!!!  Because of an uncontrollable mishap, I was left  DJ-less ONE WEEK before my wedding and frantic to find a replacement.  There I was emailing multiple Dj’s requesting quotes and availability at 9’o clock at night….. I came across Sound Prodigy on wedding wire, I quickly looked up his website and YouTube videos and was very impressed. Like all my other inquiries I sent an email not expecting a response till the next day, but less then 10 minutes later I received a phone call from Dj Pat! He quickly apologized for calling so late, but since my wedding was less then 1 week away, he felt an immediate response was necessary. I told him the services I was requesting with lighting, some song editing, music for both ceremony and reception etc… I told him what I was originally going to pay for everything, understanding that all other quotes I had obtained were double if not more then what I had budgeted for. Dj Pat acknowledged that the price was on the lower side but sympathizing with the unfortunate predicament I was in, to my surprise he agreed to do more then what I was asking for at the same price I had planned on paying!!! He was so reassuring and comforting I could not help but cry with relief. He offered to meet me the very next day if I wanted, he set me up with an account that same night so I could easily give him all the songs I wanted played for my cocktail hour, dinner, ceremony etc. That week everything he promised was done at the time he promised it by. We talked, text, emailed everyday to make sure everything was planned to my liking. On the day of my wedding he was amazing!! The reception lighting was beautiful!! My ceremony music was perfect with the song editing and timing. He was so professional and well spoken. He had a very energetic and engaging voice, and kept to our time line flawlessly. My guests danced the entire time, I Cannot say enough great things about Dj Pat. Throughout the wedding I received compliments, and even after, everyone was very impressed by him!! I highly recommend him to anyone who wants a true professional wedding Dj. I will forever be grateful to Dj Pat!!!! Thank you!!!!!

Wedding at Admiral Baker Clubhouse

Its been a while since my last blog so I figured I would take tonight and do a little blogging to start 2013 late…  but I have started again. This one has to do with a wedding at Admiral Baker Clubhouse located here in Sunny San Diego. I must say its amazingly rewarding when I have clients like these two. When I first Angelica and Josh I thought they were a wonderful couple. After our first meeting I hoped they would book and they did. Everything from the planning to the day of was awesome. They had such wonderful idea and such a creative attitude you don’t see from too many couple.

From emotional to funny they presented ideas for a ceremony that in my opinion rivals none I have seen before it and I don’t believe I will see again. Its so nice when I can have a client wrap their arms around me and say.. THANK YOU…. THANK YOU! I also have a big shout out to the photographers at True Photography for the awesome shot!

I am so glad I was able to get this picture to remember such a loving couple! I have to say for sure in my top 10 of clients that I will always remember! Congratulations to you both and I will never forget you!

Cheers, DJ Pat

The Importance Of Having A Great Wedding Emcee, By Kelly Schmid

Hello, my name is Kelly Schmid. I am a professional wedding planner here is San Diego. I cannot even begin to express the importance of a great wedding Emcee (aka “MC”)! 99% of the time your Emcee will also be your DJ. When hiring a DJ for your wedding, hiring someone that speaks eloquently and hosts a great party is just as important as hiring someone that mixes great music and reads a crowd’s taste. I have worked several weddings with “club” DJ’s, or DJ’s that are a friend of a friend, someone they found on Craigslist, etc. Once all of the formalities are out of the way, they do a fantastic job at mixing music, but it’s often one type of music…the type of music we hear out at the bars or at a club in Las Vegas.

This would be fine if a wedding was a crowd of 150 people between the ages of 18-25. But, a wedding is made up of parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, small children, co-workers and many other types of people. It is so imperative that your MC/DJ can speak in a way that appeals to all of these ages and personalities. It is so easy for me to tell when a DJ has mastered his or her verbiage in a way that flows effortlessly and seamlessly with your wedding, rather than someone who is reading off a script in a monotone, robotic way in an effort to not mess up something they have done maybe once or twice.

Your MC/DJ is essentially your host for the evening and can really make guests feel excited and at ease, or awkwardly uncomfortable. Just think, he or she will be getting on the microphone to announce the following at the very minimum:

-Grand Entrance
-First Dance
-Introducing and welcoming people for toasts
-Inviting guests onto the dance floor
-Cake Cutting
-Bouquet Toss
-Garter Toss

And, it is so important that your MC/DJ works well with all the vendors on the day of your wedding. As a wedding planner myself, I need to be able to coordinate with the DJ/MC and have them follow my lead on the timeline and any last minute changes. I personally love DJ Pat and his team from Sound Prodigy because they are fun, outgoing, and confident, yet still so professional. And, don’t even get me started how they can mix fun oldies with more current beats that appeal to every single person at the reception!

I hope this article helps put into perspective when you hire a DJ to ensure you are also hiring an even better MC for your reception!

Oingo Boingo

Clearly one of my favorite bands growing up was Oingo Boingo. It all started early 80’s when a friend of mine (Ronnie Elliott) brought some records over to my house to listen to then. I had just got a MONSTER of a new turntable, receiver and speakers for my bday when he came over to break it in with me. Even though he had a stack of records I went for 3 of them right away. They were called Only A Lad, Nothing To Fear and Good For Your Soul. Just from the artwork on the records I was drawn to them quick and when I heard ” Grey Matter” I was hooked. Its hard to explain but for me the music sounded just like the albums looked. Also because I was an artist at the time it totally inspired me to make some Oingo Boingo creations. I was really good at pen and ink and using that medium created some black and white creations from the music that I loved to listed to.

Not only did these guys create amazing music but all the art concepts they created on the albums, posters, shirts and so on was very inspiring that they had so much creativity within the organization. I also became addicted to seeing them perform live as well. From SDSU to Irvine Meadows, The Greek Theatre and so on. Or at least a far as my mom would let me go because she was overprotective of me.  While writing this blog I am also listing to Boing as a trip down memory lane. Then I decided to list my favorite Boingo songs. However, with so many in the bands catalog I told myself to come up with 10 favorite songs. In no particular order here they are..

1 – Grey Matter
2 – Dead Man’s Party
3 – Flesh N Blood
4 – Wild Sex
5 – Ain’t This The Life
6 – Who Do You Want To Be
7 – Home Again
8 – Skin
9 – Good For Your Soul
10 – Something Isn’t Right (Bachelor Party Sndtrk)

The Band VS The DJ

I have been in this situation for years now. People have asked me what the pros and cons are to having a live band or a DJ for a wedding. Now of course I am a little bias because I am a DJ. But this Blog should help people that are in this quandary consider the choices and what works better for them. The disclosure of both band and DJ.

  • Awesome atmosphere like a concert
  • Provides a party feelings
  • Full live sound
  • Musician interaction
  • Furthers sing-a-longs

  • Expensive
  • Can’t play everything we want
  • The will not coordinate not emcee your event
  • More people to deal with
  • Band requires more space
  • More power is required
  • Music will not sound like the original recording
  • Limited library of songs they can perform
  • Bands take breaks and when they do its either no music or they play a CD. If that’s the case music is not mixed and will have breaks between songs
  • No volume control on the drums.

  • Less expensive than live entertainment
  • Can play any song we want
  • Less power requirements
  • Songs will sound like themselves and not like karaoke versions
  • Takes up less space than a band
  • Contusions mixed music never any dead air or breaks taken
  • We will emcee and help coordinate your event

  • Some DJ’s can be cheesy

Now if you have a HUGE budget, go for both! This way the band can play a 45 minute to an hour set, take a break and the DJ can come on and do another 45 to an hour set as well. But if this can’t happen then I say DJ all the way!

Disney Wedding Tip For Selecting Vendors

Here is a Disney wedding tip that you might all enjoy. When selecting your Disney Fairy tale Weddings vendors, consider not only there passion for what they do in that perspective field, but also how they view Disney. If you have a vendor that’s passionate about the Disneyland brand, I believe that opens the door to many more creative options. As a DJ I want to inspire my clients. When I am creating music to set a mood or a theme to a wedding I try to give the bride & groom plenty of ideas. My creativity in selecting just the right music is what makes an event special and I know my clients really appreciate that.

People that want a Disney style wedding need the music to reflect for the overall feel. My clients can say all day long that they want a certain style of wedding. How they want the colors, centerpieces, décor Ect. But in most cases are unsure about the exact music they want. They either say something like Disney classic, or modern Disney. If you not schooled in the art of Disney magic you might be saying to yourself “What does that mean?” This wouldn’t be the case if I didn’t have that understanding and knowladge or such an extensive Disney library to choose from ( I have been collecting Disney music now for 30 years). It also gets me pumped when I am able to give them the selections my clients have never even thought of that they just absolutely adore! So weather it be a photographer, DJ, Florist, Cake decorator, Videographer, Stationary Designer and so on. Pick your professional that’s not only good at what they do, but someone that understands Disney magic!

PS, Disney means the world to me and my family.

San Diego DJ Association

I am proud to say that I am a member of the San Diego DJ association or SDDJA for short. Now what is the SDDJA? Its an organization of professional DJ’s that are committed to a higher level of standards and quality of service we provide to our clients. Created in 1990 it’s the mission of this organization to…

“The San Diego Disc Jockey Association was formed to raise the level of professionalism and to establish performance and ethical standards in the Mobile Disc Jockey industry. Since its inception, SDDJA DJs and MCs throughout San Diego County have continued to exceed their clients’ expectations. When you choose a San Diego Disc Jockey Association DJ/MC for your wedding or special event, you can be certain you are hiring a reliable, experienced performer with the highest ethical commitment to making your event a tremendous success.”

Now I had been to meetings in the past and I know people within the organization but I never thought of joining. But I didn’t want to for all the wrong reasons. I felt that I already upheld a high level of standards and didn’t need to be apart of the group because I didn’t feel that I need to prove I knew that I was professional with a moniker. But it was one awesome conversation I had with not only the president of the organization but a very respected DJ here in San Diego (Jerry Beck of Beck’s Entertainment) that changed my thoughts about the process and why it would be a positive in my becoming part of the group. .

However, being a member is not that easy. I was not only interviewed, screened and observed during one of my performances but also voted (approval) in by senior members of the organization. The process took several weeks but I did eventually get the call and I was ecstatic.

I must say it feels pretty good being a member of the elite in our industry. I have also made some new friends and have even opened up myself to more knowledge and experience of other members that love what they do as much as I do. Today is a good day!  🙂  DJ Pat
